As the saying goes: »after the rain, there always comes the sun«. It wasn’t much different in Val di Sole as Saturdays morning was graced with clear and sunny sky. Track for mornings practice was still muddy and slippery, but the sun started to dry the track slowly.
Today was a day to be remembered for a long time. Žak Gomilšček had a run of his life as he finished on 2nd place in Junior men category – just 0.339 s behind New Zealand rider Pene Tuhoto-Ariki. Žak started his run fearless and was stepping up his pace slowly through the track – he was the fastest rider at split 2, 3 and 4. At the split 3 he was already -3,032 s ahead of Pene, but faded a little bit in the last sector and had to settle for 2nd place.
“I was very nervous before the finals and slept very bad. In the morning’s practice, I really enjoyed riding very challenging track here in Val di Sole. Even though it was really slick. Before the Finals I knew what I had do: I just needed do put down a good run when it counted. The final run was far from ideal, but I didn’t let mistakes to distract me and I just pushed as hard as I could. Halfway down my number plate came off on one side and I thought there was something wrong with the bike… So, I slowed down a bit, but then I saw that is just number plate and just went full gas to the bottom. I am a bit frustrated to miss the win by 0,3 of a second, but I’m still soooo stoked for 2nd place. It’s like my dreams came true. This results gives me huge confidence boost for next weekend in Lenzerheide. I’m going to try my very best there.”
Žak left us speechless and we’re very proud of his result as this was the one to be remembered for a long time. It’s his first junior podium appearance and he’s first Slovenian male rider to stand on a podium in downhill category. He achieved this incredible result on one of the toughest track in the world which makes this achievement very special. And we’re pretty sure we can expect some big things in the upcoming years from Žak.
